So we're headed down the open road unknown ...

Recently a friend sent me the link to this youtube video: Switchfoot's "Love Alone is Worth the Fight". To say the least, it moved me, and has become a profound source of personal inspiration to stay on a journey that has taken more from me and my family than I could possibly have ever imagined. The lyrics and surfing instantly reminded me of my husband who is battling Stage IV Cancer. In fact some of the scenes are on beaches he has body surfed. He has an incredible fondness for the ocean. But moreover he is a lover and a fighter. I have more intense love and respect for him today than at any other point in our almost 23 years of marriage because of his perseverance in the face of pain and absolute faith in our Creator God's hand in his life. Why does he stay in the battle? For love. It's just that simple. He fights this cancer to stay with those he loves all the while knowing that ultimate healing only comes through leaving. Love alone IS worth the fight.

For my part, I wake up each day exhausted from all the day's battles before and from my pondering in the wee hours of the night about the rhyme and reason for being here and why all the pain that comes with it. And though my body is completely spent and empty, I get up each morning for the people I love and do it all over again. I do it for the love of my husband, the love of my children, and the love of my Savior who beckons me to head out on the road unknown and trust Him for the rhyme and reason for it all.

I have no answers, just ponderings and wanderings ... but Switchfoot has given me some inspiration to stay in the fight ... be sure to listen and check out the surf scenes and here are just a few of the lyrics:

So I'm headed down the open road unknown
And we find what we're made of
Through the open door
Is it fear you're afraid of?
What are you waiting for?
Love alone is worth the fight
Love alone is worth the fight
We're only here for a season
I'm looking for the rhyme and reason
Why you're born, why you're leaving
What you fear and what you believe in
Why you're living and breathing
Why you're fighting it and getting it even
Let's go headed down the open road unknown
